The narrator didn't wish to go further than what was necessary because she was brough up in that area as a child. And all of these things brought a flood of memories of her childhood. It made her more sad because none of this would come back, like her mother who is dead now. So she didn't want to feel much connected with it.

She did not wish to go further than what was necessary since she was walking in a street where she had spent her childhood , a street full of memories. Remembering that time would make her sad since she could not get her mother back. She was nit interested to be sad and nostalgic , this is the reason why she wasn't make much attention where she was walking.
