96) Which is not a characteristic of imbibition?

(1) It does, not depend upon the affinity between inbibant and imbibate
(2) Without making any solution
(3)It is reversible phenomenon
(4) Heat is generated

Dear student,
Please find below the solution to the asked query

Imbibition can be defined as the type of diffusion where a fluid is taken up by a solid material resulting in the swelling of the material. In the process of imbibition, the fluid is adsorbed by the material as it doesn’t get mixed up with the constituents of the material instead it stays more towards the surface and its presence increases the size of material. Under favourable conditions, this process gets reversed (the solids can regain its size and shape of the material) and so, it is reversible. It does not make any solution. During this process energy is released in form of heat. This is known as heat of wetting.
There are various factors which influence the process of imbibition. Some of these are- pressure, texture of imbibant, affinity between imbibant and imbibate.

So, out of the given options, (1) is not the characteristic of imbibition and hence, is correct.
