- Arrival of stranger in Iping at Coach and Horses Inn
- The stranger has an odd appearance: fully covered body, face covered in bandages with bog glasses over his eyes and a hat
- Mrs Hall gives him a room as he pays good money.
- Mrs Hall tries to strike a conversation with him but he is curt and enquires about his luggage.
- Teddy Henfrey comes to repair the clock in his room.
- Henfrey finds the stranger suspicious and warns Mr Hall
- Mrs Hall asks Mr Hall to mind his own business
