Unlike plants and cyanobacteria, purple sulphur bacteria does not use water as their reducing agent. Therefore, it does not produce oxygen. They can use sulphur in the form of sulphide, or thiosulphate as the electron donor in their photosynthesis pathway. Sulphur is oxidised to produce granules of elemental sulphur. This, may be oxidized to form sulphuric acid.
