Pls help me with the. Give. Reason. Part

Dear student,
a) Metallic character increases down the group i.e. down a vertical column. Now the metallic character is directly proportional to the tendecy of an element to loose electrons. Now on going down the group as the number of shells increases the attraction between outermost electrons and nucleus decreases and hence the tendency to loose electrons increases. So on going down the vertical column the metallic character increases.
b) Atomic radius of elements decreases as we go from left to right. On going from left to right number of electrons increases in the same shell. The attraction of electrons and nucleus increases as a result of which the atomic radii decreases.

In a period, atomic radius decreases from left to right. This is because the electrons are added to same shell   and so   they experience a greater pull from the nucleus.
  Explanation:

Increasing nuclear charge pulls the electrons closer to the nucleus.

Now, assuming that this one sentence didn't actually make anything clearer, let's break this down:

  • Elements in the same period have electrons with roughly the same amount of energy.

  • As you move across a period from left to right, the elements have an increasing number of protons.

  • Protons pull electrons closer to the nucleus because positive and negative charges attract.

  • Because the electrons of all the elements in a period have the same amount of energy (i.e. they're pretty much equal) and an increasing number of protons gives the nucleus more "pulling power", the electrons are pulled more tightly to the nucleus. This makes the atom smaller.
