The Jallianwalah Bagh Massacre is also known as the Amritsar Massacre that took place on April 13, 1919 when people gathered in a small park in Amritsar which was called the Jalllianwala Bagh, to protest against the arrest of two nationalist leaders- Dr Saifuddin Kitchlew and Dr Satya Pal who were arrested in Punjab under the infamous Rowlatt Act.The peaceful gathering was attended by men, women and children. General Dyer, a British military officer, stationed a regiment of soldiers at the only entrance of the park, declared the meeting illegal and without warning ordered his soldiers to fire.More than a thousand people were killed and over twice that number wounded.

The Simon Commission was appointed by Tory government in Britain and it it was headed by Sir John Simon. The revision of the Act of 1919 was necessary as it would decide the fate of further law making for India. It was with this concern that the Commission was appointed.
