Solution
V=200 cm3ρs = 0.84 gcm-3ρL = 1.05 gcm-3Let V' be the volume of wood which remains above the surface of liquid. Then submerged volume of wood v=VV'=(200V)cm3 and by the principle of floatation. Weight of wood piece = Upthrust due to submerged part of wood200×0.84×g =200-V'×1.05×g200-V'= 200×0.841.05 =160V' = 40 cm3 When wood piece is totally submerged then Upthrust = VρLg = 200 ×1.05×g = 210 gf (upwards)Weight of wood piece =Vρsg = 200×0.84×g = 168 gf (downwards)Therefore Force to be exerted to keep the wood totally submerged = Upthrust - Weight of wood piece= 210- 168 = 42 gf
