Archimedes principle states that when a body is immersed wholly or partially in a liquid, it experiences an upward buoyant force of magnitude equal to the weight of the liquid displaced by it.
With the help of a physical balance, find the weight, W1 of the given solid.Now, Immerse the solid completely in a beaker filled with water such that it doesnot touch the walls and bottom of the beaker, and find the weight W2 of solidin water.Now, Loss in weight of solid when immersed in water=W1-W2Relative density=weight of solid in airloss of weight of solid in waterRelative density=W1W1-W2If the solid is soluble in water then instead of water, take a liquid in which the solid is insoluble and it sinks in the liquid.Then in that case,Relative density=weight of solid in airloss of weight of solid in water×relative density of liquid
