In India, a literate is a person who aged seven and above and who can both read and write with understanding in any language. A person, who can only read but cannot write, is not literate. In the censuses before 1991, children below five years of age were necessarily treated as illiterate.

Literacy rates are calculated by dividing the number of people aged 15–24 years who are literate by the total population in the same age group, the result is then multiplied by 100. 
5. The ratio of deaths to the population of a particular area , during a particular period of time is called death rate. It is usually calculated as the number of deaths per one thousand people per year.
