Dear Student ,

A barometer is a scientific instrument used in meteorology to measure atmospheric pressure.
A Torricellian barometer (sometimes called a mercury barometer) is an inverted (upside-down) glass tube standing in a bath of mercury. Air pressure pushes down on the surface of the mercury, making some rise up the tube. The greater the air pressure, the higher the mercury rises.
The standard mercury barometer design is the same as the water one only the glass tube is 3’ high. As a storm approaches, the atmospheric pressure drops and the level of the column of mercury also falls. Once the storm passes and high pressure returns, the height of the column of mercury rises with the increasing atmospheric pressure.
