Recall the various cases that have expanded the definition of democracy.

There have been various historical processes ,events and  cases that have rather broadened the notion of democracy:

a. The age of Revolutions: 18th and 19th centuries marked the phase of revolutions, the French revolution, the glorious revolution laid the foundation of democracy in the World. These events popularised the ideas of liberty, equality , government based on consent, these events challenged absolute powers of the monarch, they laid the foundation of a society based on merit rather than feudal privileges etc.

b. This period also witnessed the formation of United states of America and the adoption of a democratic constitution in 1787 that formed the basis of rule of law, Bill of rights created in 1789 which sought to guarantee fundamental freedom  and limits the powers of the state.

c. Women suffrage movements- Throughout the 19th century we saw the rise of feminist movements demanding political rights and full citizenship status.

d. The Russian revolution added a new dimension, as rights came to be interpreted not only in terms of civil and political rights , but also socio economic rights

e.  Even the process of decolonisation   broadened the idea of democracy as it upheld the idea of right to self determination , self rule by those who have been suppressed for centuries.

f. We may also give example of civil rights movement which sought to end racial discrimination and expand democracy to all.

g. One may also give example of various cases, which from time to time,  in India that  has expanded the idea of democracy , for instance abolition of untouchability, right to life, Right to education, Right to information which have rather broadened the definition of democracy that goes beyond voting and calls for active participation of the people.
