Social divisions have resulted in violent and bitter ethno political conflict. Support
the statement with special reference to Northern Ireland.
In Northern Ireland the population consists 2 groups : Catholics - 44% and Protestants - 53%. Catholics were more likely to be poor. Catholics wanted Northern Ireland to be a part of Republic of Ireland but Protestants wanted to be the UK as UK has a majority of Protestants. This social division has been the reason for severe conflicts in Ireland. It was in 1998, the a peace treaty was signed and armed forces were suspended.
