solid sodium chloride is not taken as electrolytic during electrolysis give reason

Dear student
It is because in order to conduct electricity a solid must have either free electrons or the free ions.solid NaCl is a neutral molecule and does not have any free electron.Sodium chloride is an ionic compound. In solid state it does not conduct electricity but when it is dissolved in water dissociates to Na
+ and Cl-ions. These dissociated ions of NaCl  in water conducts electricity.
