The author calls her two-week stay in Antarctica, ‘a chilling prospect’. How far do you think is she justified? What other features of the Antarctic environment are highlighted?

Dear Student,

Antarctica is the coldest place on Earth. Its average temperature ranges from -10 degrees Celsius to -60 degrees Celsius. The author is an inhabitant of South India, where average annual temperatures are between 25 degrees Celsius to 30 degrees Celsius. Thus, she was unaccustomed to such an unusually cold environment. So, she calls her stay in Antarctica a chilling prospect. In the chapter, the pristineness of the Antarctic environment is well-highlighted. Antarctic ice-cores hold half-million-year-old carbon records. These are crucial for studying the climatic patterns of yesteryears. The place has a simple ecosystem. However, tampering with it can cause depletion of the ozone layer. It also stores 90 % of Earth's ice content.
