the creation of linguistic state was the first and major test of Democratic politics in our country -justify the statement

Dear Student,

The language policy enshrined in the constitution was a safeguard for protection and promotion of major languages in our country. Under this policy, there were 22 Indian languages which have been recognised as official languages in part XVII of the constitution under articles 343 to 351. While constitution did not give national language status to any of these languages, Hindi was considered as official language. Adhering to the demands of many non-Hindi speaking states, English was also used for official communication alongside Hindi. During the early post-independence period, the geographical boundaries of many Indian states have been altered to create new states on linguistic basis. Thus, people who belonged to the same linguistic background were made part of the same state. Conceding to the demands of the states such as Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Gujarat, the central government decided to create states on linguistic lines. This has resulted in making the country more strong and united which eventually suited the motto ''Unity in Diversity". As the creation of linguistic states was eventually accepted by the people of respective states alongside the state governments, it remained as a major test for democratic set up in the country. Thus, the creation of states also resulted in strengthening the unity and integrity of India.
