The movement of water across plasma membrane is also affected by the amount of substance dissolved in water. What does this line mean?.

Dear Student,

Movement of water across the plasma membrane is affected by the amount of substance dissolved in the water because; smaller particles will diffuse more easily than the larger particles. Water is a polar molecule and a universal solvent. It can dissolve many substances but substances such as sugars and salts are larger hydrophilic uncharged molecules. They cannot diffuse easily across plasma membranes. Charged molecules will not be able to diffuse through the plasma membrane. Ions or some specific transporters are required for transporting charged and larger molecules like proteins. This also requires expenditure of energy.

Regards.
