The peasants also had to pay a number of indirect taxes which will levied on articles of everyday consumption like salt and tobacco.
What does this sentence mean when they say articles of everyday consumption?

Dear Student,
While the state levying taxes on luxury products is seen as justified because they are used by the elites and they can afford to pay taxes, articles of everyday consumption are mostly used by poor people who have limited resources and thus struggle to pay taxes. When taxes are levied on articles of everyday consumption, that is, objects that are necessary for survival, in this case, salt and on objects that are used by everyone like tobacco, it becomes a burden on the poor. Staple items are necessary for survival and should not be taxed by the state. But in France, taxes were levied on the peasants and the nobles were given privileges, making poor more poor and rich richer.
