He feels like he is trapped in life due to his abject poverty and hopeless situation. He finds that stealing allows him to improve his condition slightly. But, he is shown generosity by the ironmaster's kind daughter. She is representative of the good values of generosity, kindness, forgiveness and charity. Good values prevail over bad ones as the peddler's heart is changed. He leaves the money behind to be returned to its rightful owner and pledges to lead a life of honesty.
