The intellectuals in Vietnam were divided on the issue of what should be the constituent of modernization. Some intellectuals held that there is a need to strengthen the Vietnamese tradition to stop the domination of west whereas few intellectuals thought of learning from the west while a few looked at Japan as the model of modernization. Nationalist like Phan Boi Chau were hostile to western values whereas nationalist like Phan Chu Trinh was in favour of western institution of democracy. Another divergent view about the modernization is also reflected from the popularisation of ‘ go east movement’ and 300 Vietnamese student going for modern education in Japan. This way there were many view flourishing in the society about the modernization of Vietnam, which also led to many complex debates in the country.
