The refractive indices of water and glass with respect to air are 4/3 and 3/2 respectively. If the speed of light in glass is 2x 108ms -1, find the speed of light in

1. Air

2. Water

 Let the speed of light in air be x

Refractive index of glass = speed of light in air / speed of light in glass

 3 / 2= x / 2 * 108 ms-1

x =  3 * 2*  10ms-1 / 2

x = 3 *  10ms-1

 speed of light in air =  3 *  10ms-1

2. Water

Refractive index of water = speed of light in air / speed of light in water

4 / 3 = 3 *  10ms-1 / speed of light in water

speed of light in water =  3 *  10ms-1 * 3 / 4

speed of light in water =  9 *  10ms-1 *  / 4

speed of light in water = 2.2 * 10ms-1

The refractive index of water with respect to air = 4/3

The refractive index of glass with respect to air = 3/2

(1) Refractive index (of a medium)

= speed of light in air / speed of light in medium

3/2 = speed of light in air / 2 x 108 ms-1

: Speed of light in air = 3x10 -8 ms-1

(2) 4/3 = speed of light in air / speed of light in water

or  4/3 = 3 X 10 8 m/s / speed of light in water

or speed of light in water = 9/4 X10 8

= 2.25 X 10 8 ms-1

ng = 3/2 and nw = 4/3. Absolute Refractive Index of a medium = Speed of light in vacuum/Speed of light in the medium Speed of light in glass = 2 x 108 m/s Speed of Light in Vacuum = (3/2) x 2 x 108 m/s = 3 x 108 m/s Speed of light in water = (3 x 108 m/s)/(4/3) = 2.25 x 108 m/s
