This sentence means that the thoracic cavity or chest cavity (cavity containing organs like lungs, heart etc) is protected from all the sides. On the back side (dorsal) by vertebral column (backbone), on the front side (ventral) by chest or breast bone called sternum, on the sides (lateral) by ribs and on the lower abdominal side by diaphragm.
