The wastes of many factories contain acids.Why is it considered necessary to neutralize them before allowing the wastes to flow into water bodies?

If the acids flow into water bodies they can cause a threat to the lives of sea creatures and to anybody who drinks the water or takes it into his body and so the factory wastes are neutralised by adding basic substances
