Transitive Intransitive. What are they ?

A verb that shows an action which passes over from the subject to the object is called Transitive verb.

E.G. 1) The boys are flying kites.

Transitive verbs always take an object with them. In order to find the object we ask the question 'what' , 'who' or 'whom'

In above example we ask

What are the boys flying?

Here 'kite' is the object of the verb 'fly'.

The action of the subject / doer, 'a boy, is passed over to the object, 'kite.

INTRANSITIVEVERBS :

The verbs that shows an action which does not pass over to an object is called an Intransitive verb.

E.G. The glass broke into pieces.

Here, if you ask Who broke the glass? You will not get the answer.

Therefore the action is not passed over from the subject, 'the glass' to the object or the receiver.
