There are basically four types of blood groups depending upon the presence/absence of two types of antigens (antigen a and antigen b) on the Red blood cells of blood and respective antibodies in the blood plasma. Antigens are protein or polysaccharide molecules while as antibodies are protein molecules produced against these antigens in blood. These groups are classified as:
1. Blood Group A: contains antigen A and antibody B
2. Blood Group B: contains antigen B and antibody A.
3. Blood Group AB: contains both A and B antigens but no antibody
4. Blood Group O: contains no antigen while both antibodies A and B are present.
These blood groups are further classified on the basis of presence or absence of another antigen called as Rh' antigen as Rh positive or Rh negative. The presence of Rh antigen on RBCs is termed as Rh postive blood while the absence of Rh antigen is termed as Rh negative blood.
2. Same antigenic blood can be donated to the person whether it is a/b antigen or Rh antigen.
