what are eukaryotes and prokaryotes?

  • Prokaryotes are cells or organisms which do not have definite nucleus and membrane bound organelles. Example: Bacteria and Blue green algae.
  • Eukaryotes are cells or organisms which consist of well defined nucleus and membrane bound organelles. Example: Animals and Plants.

Differences:

Prokaryotes

Eukaryotes

Size of the cell is generally small

(1-10 micro metre).

Size of the cell is generally large

(5-100 micro metre).

Nucleus is absent.

Nucleus is present.

It contains single chromosome.

It contains more than one chromosome.

Nucleolus is absent

Nucleolus is present

Membrane bound cell organelles are absent.

Cell organelles  such as mito chondria, plastids, endoplasmic recticulam, golgi apparatus  etc. are present.

Cell division takes place by fission or  budding (no  mitosis)

Cell division occurs by mitotic or meiotic  division.

ProkaryotesEukaryotes
They are mainly unicellularThey are mainly multicellular except for protista
They have only a few organellesMany organelles
DNA is circularDNA is linear
DNA lies in the cytoplasm (Nucleus absent)DNA is inside the nucleus
Cell division occurs mostly through binary fissionMitosis, meiosis or both take place.
