what are hypocotyl and epicotyl?

Hypocotyl and epicotyl are the parts of a seed embryo or seedling.

  • Hypocotyl– Part of the seedling stem below the cotyledons. The entire plant shoot system develops from its growing tip, plumule.
  • Epicotyl – Upper portion of the axis of a seedling, above the cotyledons and below the next leaf. It is the transition zone between the rudimentary root and shoot.
