What are rainwater harvesting systems

The process by which rain water is collected and stored either to recharge the ground water or for use in the future is known as rainwater harvesting. The method or setup used for rainwater harvesting is known as rainwater harvesting system. For example, rooftop harvesting system.

The rainwater on the roofs of the buildings is collected through canals that drain the water into ground reservoirs. This stored water is later utilized.

Rainwater harvesting is the accumulation and deposition of rainwater for reuse on-site, rather than allowing it to runoff. Uses include water for garden, water for livestock, water for irrigation, water for domestic use with proper treatment, and indoor heating for houses etc. In many places the water collected is just redirected to a deep pit with percolation. The harvested water can be used as drinking water as well as for storage and other purpose like irrigation.

Rainwater harvesting is a technique of collection and storage of rainwater into natural reservoirs or tanks, or the infiltration of surface water into subsurface aquifers (before it is lost as surface run off). One method of rainwater harvesting is rooftop harvesting.
