what are the benefits of backcross and test cross??

Backcrossing is a crossing of a hybrid progeny with one of its parents to achieve offspring with a genetic identity which is closer to that of the parent.

It is of great use in horticulture, animal breeding and genetics.

Test crossing is a crossing between the hybrid progeny and the parent with recessive genes to determine the unknown genotype of the progeny.

test cross--to predict the genotype of known individual

Back cross is the cross that involves the mating of the F1 hybrid with one of its parent.

It can be explained with this example. Suppose a homozygous tall plant having genotype TT is crossed with the homozygous small plant having genotype tt, then their hybrid will be Tt (F1 plant). Now back cross is crossing this Tt individual with either TT or tt individual.

Test cross is a cross in which an individual with an unknown dominant phenotype is crossed with an individual (parent) homozygous recessive for that trait.

Test cross determines whether the dominant character is coming from homozygous dominant genotype or heterozygous genotype. Thus it is more useful than back cross.

Hi,

Back cross: It is a cross that is made between a hybrid and one of its parent.

Test cross: It is a cross in which an individual with an unknown dominant phenotype is crossed with an individual (parent) homozygous recessive for that trait.
