Amoeba graze on bacteria and keep the bacteria populations in active growth phases. This keeps he bacteria actively decomposing detritus in soil and aquatic systems.

The ammonium is used by plants, algae, or fungi as their source of nitrogen for synthesizing nucleic acids, amino acids or chelating porphyrin rings for molecules like hemoglobin or chlorophyll.
