what are the steps involved in purification of water for drinking purpose??
Dear student,
Steps involved in purification of drinking water:
Aeration – The raw water is directed to aeration tanks where large quantities of air are injected in to reduce tastes and odors.
Flash Mixing – different chemicals are added depending on the types and concentrations of impurities found in the raw water.Example: lime, sodium carbonate, alum etc.
Flocculation – The chemicals react with the impurities forming small particles of solid matter suspended in the water. The solid particles (floc) accumulate in feathery white agglomerations.
Settling - The water is sent to a clarifier where the floc is allowed to settle out of the water. The settled sludge is often disposed of in a sewer.
Filtration - The partially treated water is filtered through sand and carbon to remove remaining solids.
Additives - Chlorine is added to disinfect the water and to prevent future growth of pathogens. Lime and glassy phosphates may be added to reduce corrosion of pipes carrying the water.
Regards.
