What criteria were used for classification of organisms before Linnaeus? Give examples

Before the binomial nomenclature came into existence, the animals were classified based on their mode of movement.There was no distinction in the genera For eg: The species for man was defined  in the manner such as Animal rationalis, where animal served as genera and rationalis served as species 'man' to distuinguish from other animals of the genera.
