what do u mean by concentration gradient?

Concentration gradient refers to the difference in concentrations of a substance across a semipermeable membrane. For example, Take a container and partition it into two equal halves A and B, by placing a semipermeable membrane in between. Now take 50 ml of water on both sides of the membrane. Dissolve 5 gm of sugar on side A and 10 gm on side B. Now water molecules have interacted with the sugar molecules on both sides but since the amount of sugar in side A is less, there would be more free water molecules in this side than in side B because it has a higher sugar concentration. In this case, water will move from side A to side B. Concentration gradient plays a very important role in the movement of substances in and out of a cell in a living system.

A concentration gradient is when there is an uneven distribution of a substance across a border. For example, think of a balloon. The air inside the balloon is more concentrated than the air outside of it. There is a concentration gradient because of the differences in concentration. And what happens when you release the tip of the balloon? The air inside the balloon shoots out because things like it when the concentration is equal everywhere. So when something moves against its concentration gradient, it is being forced from an area where it is less concentrated into a place where it is more concentrated. Conversely, when something moves down its concentration gradient, it is going from a place where it is more concentrated to where it is less concentrated. However, it is important to note that ENERGY MUST BE EXPENDED TO MOVE SOMETHING AGAINST ITS CONCENTRATION GRADIENT, but no energy must be used to move something down its concentration gradient.

in simple words, conc. gradient is difference in concentration of anything between two different places.

for eg. you have 25 chocolates and ur brother/ sister has only 5, then there is a conc. gradient between you and ur sis. and so the flow is more likely to be from you to ur sis. in the same it btween membranes of a cell

hope this will clear you concept.
