what happened in Nagpur in 1925 during congress session

Dear Student,

By 1920, Congress had changed its character, It became an organiser of masses giving an active role to the people of the country. The Congress now instead of seeking the dominion status within the British Empire, declared Swaraj as its goal. However, this created tussle within the congress, members like C.R Das repudiated it. Many members feared that the non-cooperation movement as mooted by Gandhi would become violent and were not comfortable with the idea of boycotting council elections. It was finally in the 1920 Nagpur session that differences were sported out. It was agreed that Congress would strive for Swaraj through peaceful methods instead of earlier legal and constitutional methods. The non-cooperation movement was combined with the Khilafat movement in this session. The membership of Congress would be now 4 annas so that it could become a mass organisation and shed its elitist character. It was decided that Congress would reach the people at the grass-root levels.
