What happens when a piece of coal is beaten with a hammer?

Dear Student,

As the coal is not a malleable substance on hammering it just broke into pieces instead of being pressed like a sheet as iron does.
This is because iron has malleable property and it can be flattened by hammering but coal does not have such property, hence it suddenly broke down into pieces as a slight force is applied.

Regards.
