What is a Integer in Algebra?
The integers are the numbers { ......-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3,...........}. They are all natural numbers, their negatives and 0.
ALGEBRA is a branch of mathematics in which arithmetical operations and relationships are generalized by using alphabetical symbols to represent unknown numbers.
consider an algebraic equation , x + 2 = -3
Here the letter x is called the variable. Our goal is to solve this equation to get the value of x.
By using arithmetic operations we can get the value of x
we have, x + 2 = -3
subtracting '2' from both sides of the equation, we get
x + 2 - 2 = -3 -2
x + 2 + (-2) = (-3) + (-2)
When we add a positive and a negative integer ,then we take the difference of two numbers and give the sign of the integer which has greater numerical value so, 2 + (-2) = 0
When we add two negative integers , then we add their magnitudes and give common sign to their sum . so, (-3) + (-2) = -5
now the above algebraic equation becomes , x + 0 = -5 ⇒ x = -5
So, the knowledge of integers is helpful in algebra.
