what is a petroleum and how was it formed?and show three images also.

Dear user,
Petroleum :
It is a naturally occuring organic compound found in geological formations, below the Earth's surface.
Formation :
There are basically two theories for its formation but the most accepted is :
Organic theory :
In precambrian period mainly marine life forms were living on Earth and they were mainly plankton(rich in hydrogen and carbon).
Over 95% of living matter found in the ocean is plankton,as these plankton became dead, their remains were
collected by the process of erosion and sedimentation.
Successive layers of mud which is rich in organic and silt covered preceding layers of sediments rich in organic and
overtime created layers on the sea floor which were rich in the fossil remains of the previous life.
Thermal maturation process that is heat, decay and pressure slowly converted the organic matter into
oil and gas over periods of millions of geologic years.
This is how petroleum is formed.
