  1. The Doctrine of Lapse is a policy by Lord Dalhousie introduced to expand British territories in India.
  2. A brainchild of the hardcore imperialist, Lord Dalhousie, the Doctrine of Lapse stated that a dependent or subsidary state would pass on to the hands of the British if the ruler died without a natural successor.
  3. The right to adopt children was not accepted.

The Doctrine of Lapse is an Improved version of one of the terms of another british official.

It meant that, if a king doesn't have his natural heir, then the kingdom will collapse or fall into the hands of East INDIA company

No adopted child was allowed to rule the kingdom

The britishers annexed Jhansi, Satara, Nagpur and many other states by this term

The policy of Dalhousie particularly known as Doctrine of Lapse created fear and resentment among the india rulers. They were not allowed to adopt heir to the throne. This policy ensured that those kingdoms where kings do not have natural heirs would taken by the british after the demise of the king. For eg - Nagpur, Jhansi and Satara were annexed

The?doctrine of lapse?was an?annexation?policy purportedly devised by?Lord Dalhousie, who was the?Governor General?for the?East India Company?in?Indiabetween 1848 and 1856. According to the doctrine, any?princely state?or territory under the direct influence (paramountcy) of the?British East India Company?(the dominant?imperial?power in the?subcontinent), as a?vassal stateunder the British subsidiary system, would automatically be annexed if the ruler was either "manifestly incompetent or died without a male heir".[1]?The latter supplanted the long-established right of an Indian sovereign without an heir to choose a successor.[citation needed]?In addition, the British decided whether potential rulers were competent enough.
