Earthing is done to make the unwanted charges flow down to earth through a conducting wire. Earthing is the proper connection of exposed metal parts of an electrical circuit to the ground. It is accomplished by thick copper wires. Earthing protects the appliances and human beings in case of insulation fail or accidental short circuit. When the live wire touches the earth wire, large current flows through it and causes the fuse to blow off or circuit breaker to trip and thereby protecting the appliance as well as users.

Earthing is usually done to prevent extensive damage to our body as well as domestic appliances.

When high voltage comes through electric wires, then our appliances can be damaged. Also, during lightining in the sky, a metal rod is connected to heavy metal plate beneath the building or house. This is also called 'earthing '.

Earthing is a safety device used to prevent a shock due to leakages arising from weak insulation, breaking of the element or otherwise.

In electrical engineering, the term ground or earth has several meanings depending on the specific application areas. Ground is the reference point in an electrical circuit from which other voltages are measured, a common return path for electric current (earth return or ground return), or a direct physical connection to the Earth.

Earthing is a process in which transfer of charges is taken place. This charge is take from a charged object and then goes to the EARTH.

Example: The third pin of an electric iron plug is for earthing. The metal body of the electric iron is connected to this pin which is connected to the earthing wire. If by any chance the live wire comes in contat with the metal body, the earthing wire will let the current flow to the ground. Thus, saving the user from getting electric shock.
