What is endoplasmic reticulum?

Dear Student,

Endoplasmic Reticulum is a membrane bound cell organelle. It has tubular or sac like membranous structure, found usually continuous with the nuclear membrane. When ribosomes are attached to its surface it is called Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER), otherwise its surface is smooth and this kind of Endoplasmic Reticulum is called Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (SER).
Function of Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (SER): Synthesis of lipid, steroids and carbohydrates.
Function of Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER): Synthesis of protein and its trafficking.
