What is mean

Dear student,

Mean for a given set of data is the average calculated for a given set of numbers or data. It is also known as arithmetic mean or the average of a given set of data. This is referred to as the total of all the values of data provided divided by the number of data values in total for any given set of data.It also measures the central tendency of data.

Mean = Sum of ObservationsTotal number of observations
For example,

Find the mean for the given set of random data : 3, 5, 9, 17, 19
Mean = 3+5+9+17+195= 535= 10.6

Mean is an average of the given numbers: a calculated central value of a set of numbers. In simple words, it is the average of the set of values. In statistics, the mean is one of the Measures of central tendency, apart from the mode and median. But altogether, all three measures (mean, median, mode) define the central value of given data or observations.

Mean = (Sum of all the observations/Total number of observations)

Example: What is the mean of 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10?

First add all the numbers,

2+4+6+8+10 = 30

Now divide by 5 (total number of observations)

Mean = 30/5 = 6
