what is meant by capping and tailing in transcription process in eukaryotes?

the process of addion of methyl guanosine triphosphate to the 5' end of hnRNA is termed as capping

whereas addition of adenylate residues (200-300) to the 3' end of hnRNA is termed as tailing.

capping and tailing followed by splicing changes hnRNA into mRNA.

The precursor of mRNA is called heterogeneous nuclear RNA (hnRNA). hnRNA undergoes two additional processing called capping and tailing. In capping an unusual nucleotide (methyl guanosine triphosphate) is added to the 5'-end of hnRNA and helps in recognition of mRNA by the ribosome and its protection from RNases. In tailing, adenine nucleotides are added at 3'-end or tail of hnRNA which is important in maintaining the stability of RNA, export from the nucleus and translation.

Capping:in this process a nucleotide methyl guanosine triphosphate gets attached to the 5 dash end of hnRNA

Tailing:in this process 200 to 300 adenylate residuces gets attached at the 3 dash end of hnRNA.this process is also known as polyadenylation.
