- Soil, Organic matter means something that is alive or was once alive. Example: leaves and animals. If they are dead, they can still be called organic. Organic matter is an important part of soil because it adds nutrients and improves the texture. Organic matter consists of plants and animals wastes. Example- onion peel, cow dung, green manure, compost etc. It also contains living creatures like earthworm,fungus, bacteria etc that makes the soil healthy. This important organic matter makes up only a small fraction of the total materials in soil.
