What is polar covalent bond??

Dear student,

The covalent bond between two atoms with different electronegativities is called a polar covalent bond. Due to different electronegativities, the less electronegative atom acquires a partial positive charge and the more electronegative atom acquires a partial negative charge and thus the compound becomes polar. Example: HCl, H2O

In the following example, the green circle is an oxygen atom and the blue circles are hydrogen atoms. Due to the lone pair of electrons, the water molecule takes an angled shape and the difference in the electronegativities makes the oxygen atom partially negative.

Dear student,

Polar covalent bonds are those bonds in which electrons spend more time near one of the elements. This situation arises owing to difference in the electronegativities of the two concerned elements. Larger the difference in electronegativity, more polar the bond will be. Due to this, the more electronegative element attains a partial negative charge and the other element has a partial positive charge.

In the following example, green circle is oxygen atom and blue circles are hydrogen atoms. Due to lone pair of electrons, the water molecule takes an angled shape and the difference in the electronegativities make oxygen atom partially negative.
