what is Ramsar site?

A Ramsar site is the place where wetlands are conserved. Ramsar convention is the international treaty signed in 1971, for the conservation and sustainable utilisation of wetlands. It was named after the city Ramsar in Iran where it was signed. Wetlands play crucial ecological, economic, cultural and scientific role. Hence, their conservation was an important issue. Some of the Ramsar sites in India are- Bhoj wetland in Madhya Pradesh, Kanji wetland in Punjab, Hokera wetland in Jammu and Kashmir etc.
