what is the difference between Non-chordates and Protochordates?

Kingdom Animalia is divided into chordates and non-chordates on the basis of the presence or absence of notochord. Non-chordates do not possess a notochord, whereas all members of phylum Chordata possess notochord.  Protochordata is the subphyla of the phylum Chordata.

Protochordates are the organisms that have a rod like cartilagenous structure called notochord which gives rise to nervous system. These have pharyngeal gill slits.

Nonchordates are the organisms that do not have a notochord. These do not have pharyngeal gill slits.
