The Golgi apparatus (Golgi complex) is an organelle found in most eukaryotic cells. It was identified in 1898 by the Italian physician Camillo Golgi, after whom the Golgi apparatus is named.

It processes and packages proteins inside of the cell and before they make their way to their destination; it is particularly important in the processing of proteins for secretion. The Golgi apparatus forms a part of the cellular endomembrane system.

The golgi bodies  stores, packages and distributes the proteins and lipids made in the endoplasmic reticulam.
Proteins, which are meant to return to the endoplasmic reticulum, carry a distinctive 'tag'. The golgi apparatus recognizes the tag and transports the proteins back to the endoplasmic reticulum.
