What make Heartwood resistant to attack of microorganism and insects

Dear Student

Heartwood does not contain an abundant supply of materials essential to the growth of these pests. That is why, it is more resistant to termites and borers and wood decay.

Heart wood is used to make furniture because it is composed of dead elements, with highly lignified walls. It imparts dark brown colour to the older trees because of the deposition of the organic compounds such tannins, resins, essential oils, gums, etc. It makes the plant durable and resistant to attack by microbes and pests.
