1. It is difficult to predict earthquakes and in many situations, they prove to be highly destructive.
2. It thus becomes essential and important to take necessary precautions to protect ourselves from this kind of natural calamities
3. There are numerous methods to measure the magnitude of an earthquake. Richter scale is the most widely accepted instrument in measuring the magnitude of earthquake.
4. Though the magnitude of earthquakes can be measured their destruction or damage that they would cause could not be predicted. Sometimes, earthquakes of high magnitude can cause landslides, avalanches, tsunami, etc, and throws out abundant rocks and mud when they occur
5. Hence, people living in places where earthquakes are more likely to occur, have to be specially prepared. In the first place, the buildings should be designed in such a way that they can withstand major tremors and this is made possible with modern building techniques
6. Preventive measures taken by Seismologists in measuring the magnitude of earthquakes
a. Scientists always look forward innovative methods in predicting the occurrence of major earthquakes. Most of the earthquakes and minor tremors are measured with seismographs
b. The seismographs calculate the seismic waves and can locate the epicenter of the earthquake easily. They can detect seismic activities below the surface of the earth
c. Nowadays, satellites that orbit above the earth analyse and observe even the minor movement of earth’s plates
d. Animals help in predicting the earthquake as they become anxious and leave the region wherein the earthquake is about to occur!
