What were the different contracts signed by the sharecroppers in regard to indigo plantation? (120-150 words)

Solution:-

The arable land in Champaran was subdivided into estates. These estates were owned by British landlords. Indian farmers worked as tenants on these estates. The landlords forced the tenants to dedicate 15 percent of their lands to grow indigo. This was the long term agreement that was in place in Champaran. However, when Germany produced synthetic indigo, the commercial viability of producing indigo decreased drastically. The landlords forced the tenants to pay compensation for releasing them from the contracts that they were compelled to sign in the first place.
