what were the reasons of discontent among the indian sepoys ??

There were many reasons. Some are:1)The sepoys were paid much less than the British soldiers. They were also treated unfairly by the British officers.2) All high posts in the army were reserved for the British. Hence, the scope of promotion was very limited for a sepoy.3) The sepoys were not allowed to wear caste and religious marks.4) An act was passed that required the new recruits to travel overseas, if needed. The Hindu sepoys believed that travelling across the sea led to loss of caste.

As sepoys were told to go by sea route to Burma they refused and they said that they will go there by land route and they disobeyed the order of the British so they were severely punished.

5)Mutiny in several sepoy companies of the Bengal army was sparked by the issue of new gunpowder cartridges for the Enfield rifle February,           1857. A rumour was spread that the cartridges were made from cow and pig fat. Loading the Enfield required tearing open the greased cartridge     with one's teeth. This would have insulted both Hindu and Muslim religious practices; cows were considered holy by Hindus, while pigs were           considered unclean by Muslims.
